GARDEN NURSERY SCHOOL
The original brief for the Garden Nursery School was conceptually uncomplicated: Convert an existing duplex into a nursery school with a classroom and playground. However multiple constraints bearing on the site, program and client made a simple proposal a challenging project to realize:
Starting with the need for a discretionary approval from the planning department and an inherited tenant intent on staying as long as possible, the extended timetable for approval and realization was only exacerbated by the revolving-door nature of the school's cooperative organization.
Fortunately the project's extended gestation accommodated more points of view than a normal timetable would have allowed, resulting in a richer manifestation of the school's program.
